An LA-based nonprofit dedicated to creating pathways for Los Angeles students to attend Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

About HBCU Route

HBCU Route is a community driven initiative that bridges Los Angeles youth to Historically Black Colleges and Universities through mentorship, cultural exchange, and strategic partnerships. With a focus on access, support, and empowerment, HBCU Route creates pathways for students to thrive academically and personally—whether they’re exploring college options, transitioning into higher education, or returning home.

 Cheyenne Sims, Howard University


Cheyenne Sims is a proud South Central native, mom, and lifelong advocate dedicated to uplifting her community and creating pathways to opportunity for Black youth. With a background in grassroots organizing and a passion for racial, educational, and economic equity, Cheyenne has spent over a decade mentoring and advocating for students across Los Angeles.

A Howard University alumna, Cheyenne holds a Bachelor of Arts in African Studies. She founded HBCU Route to continue her commitment to educational justice and community empowerment. Cheyenne's unwavering dedication to social justice drives her ongoing efforts to make a meaningful impact in the lives of those she serves.

 Eric Aguiar, Bethune Cookman


Eric Aguiar is a committed public servant with over 15 years of experience in youth advocacy, public administration, and community engagement. A proud graduate of Bethune-Cookman University, Eric holds a Bachelor's in Business Administration and a Master’s in Public Administration. His dedication to building stronger, more equitable communities has been the driving force behind his career in both government and grassroots spaces.

Eric brings a depth of experience and a proven history of leadership. Prior to assuming this role, Eric worked as the Southeast Deputy for Councilwoman Heather Hutt of the City of Los Angeles’ 10th District. While serving in this position, Eric played an instrumental role in cultivating relationships with residents, community organizations, business leaders, and governmental officials. He also oversaw multimillion-dollar contracts in the Mayor’s Office of Public Safety, leveraging his experience to ensure city compliance, while extending programming to youth between the ages of 10 and 24.

 Aniya Gary, Prairie View A&M


Aniya Gary is a proud graduate of Prairie View A&M University with a BA in Marketing, originally from Houston and now based in Los Angeles. She works as a Marketing Specialist at a leading software company, driving growth through data-driven strategies, and also consults with brands to refine messaging and increase visibility. A gifted singer-songwriter, Aniya blends creativity and strategy to inspire through both her art and professional work. She also serves as Secretary on the Board of HBCU Route, a nonprofit guiding Los Angeles students toward Historically Black Colleges and Universities, where she manages communications, supports outreach, and helps shape strategic initiatives. Passionate about equity and empowerment, Aniya is dedicated to creating meaningful impact in both business and community spaces.

 Ayanna Jackson, Howard University


Centering the experiences of Black youth and families is the driving force of the work that Ayanna Jackson does in her community. Born and raised in Buffalo, New York, Ayanna received her Bachelor of Arts in Africana Studies from Howard University. Throughout her undergraduate career, she worked with the Children’s Defense Fund’s Freedom Schools program, teaching and coordinating programs focused on literacy and youth activism in Southeast Washington D.C. Now based in Los Angeles, Ayanna received her Master of Social Work and Public Administration from the University of Southern California with a concentration on supporting youth navigating the foster care system, homelessness, and juvenile justice system. Currently, she serves as a school counselor, mentor, and advocate that leads with an approach rooted in African history, culture, and empowerment.

Alton Pitre, Morehouse College


Alton Pitre
Hailing from Baldwin Village in South Central LA, Alton Pitre overcame a wrongful life sentence as a youth, transforming his life from the "Jailhouse to Morehouse." A Morehouse College alumnus, Pitre is now a journalist, photographer, and advocate with a proven track record in the U.S. juvenile and criminal justice systems. As a founding member of the Anti-Recidivism Coalition, he brings invaluable expertise in consultancy, working with community organizations and LA County officials to support justice-impacted youth. Passionate about giving back, Pitre also mentors youth inside juvenile halls and teaches afterschool programs, working on the ground to make a difference.

We will organize college fairs and events in Los Angeles, bringing together HBCUs, alumni, and Black youth. 


These events will provide an opportunity for students to interact with representatives from various HBCUs, learn about different programs and scholarships, and receive guidance on the application process online or in person.”

We will establish mentorship programs, connecting Black youth with HBCU alumni who can provide guidance, support, and advice throughout their educational journey.
